The History of Power Up Clubs
Christian Family Chapel in Jacksonville, FL assessed their VBS program in 2003, under the leadership of Joni Alexander. CFC realized about 50-60% of attendees were from their own church, and about 40% were regular attendees from other local churches. They realized their impact on children who didn’t have church exposure was literally zero.
CFC and Alexander decided to launch a program that was clearly focused on evangelism. Power Up Club was born. It was put in the front yards and filled full of energy, enthusiasm, and good, clean fun! In their very first year, attendance over doubled and 70% of the kids attending Power Up Club were not involved in a church.

I am Joni Alexander, the Power Up Club developer
After noticing that our church’s wonderful VBS program was filled with 50% of our own church’s kids, 49% of other churches’ kids, and 1% of non-churched kids; we were motivated to get the Good News of Jesus out to the community.
Power Up Clubs was initiated in the summer of 2003, almost tripling the number of children who had formerly attended our on-campus event. The best news of all is that, well over, 70% of those children and their families were not connected to any church. Immediately, we realized that we needed to GO TO THEM, not expect non-churched families to come to us!
That very first year, we also realized that Power Up Club was not only an incredible evangelistic resource, it offered our Student Ministry discipleship and training opportunities that were very fruitful! We saw our students trained and challenged as never before. They were learning and serving at the same time, creating a wonderful environment for real life change. On top of that, they got to spend the week together and simply had a blast!
I have had the privilege of seeing God work in mighty ways through Power Up Club. Hundreds have been saved, thousands have heard the Gospel, and I cannot wait to see how He works through this ministry in the years ahead! I am looking forward to meeting and working with many new churches throughout the country … and I look forward to meeting YOU!

Since 2003, serving in Power Up Club has been the foundation of my service to God. Pouring into students who then pour out to children at Clubs has enabled the Gospel to reach the lost in a unique way. Knowing that when our Clubs end the outreach to the children and their families will continue as trained Host Homes love them well brings unbounded joy. Watching God expand Power Up Club for His glory has been a prayer of mine since 2008. Thankful!
My surrender to Jesus in 1989 happened as I held my firstborn in my arms. I knew that I would never be the same and began growing in my faith walk with Him. Teaching in churches, in public schools, in at-risk communities, overseas, and as a homeschool teacher allowed me to share my faith with “the least of these”. Investing in Power Up Club to train up the next generations of faith-filled student leaders has kept me on my knees for over 150 of them as they reach adulthood. Knowing that many of them continue serving Jesus by vocation or in service affirms that God’s hand is truly on this ministry. Blessed!
I have been married to Steve since 1986. Our four adult children and two grandchildren have all participated in Power Up Club alongside me since 2003, with three serving on our leadership teams. Overwhelmed!
